Traffic Tickets and How to Handle Them

If you are over the age of 16 and own a vehicle, chances are that at one point in time you have received one or maybe more than one traffic tickets. And as much as we appreciate our fellow police officers, and the work they do for our community's security, let's admit it - we all want to stay as far as possible from them.

If you got unlucky and got pulled over here are some piece of advice on how to deal your with your encounter with the police officer.


Don't act foolish. Besides receiving a ticket for a traffic violation, you don't want to end up in jail.

  • Never admit guilt. If possible don't say anything at all. The police officer could use whatever you say against you in a court of law.

  • Never disagree with the police officer. There is nothing worse than an upset officer. Considering how high the traffic fines are these days it is in your best interest to keep it as low as possible.

  • Appeal to the officer's emotions. Let's face it. They are human too. And as tough as they may want to appear, they might give you a break if you can push the right buttons. Act as if this traffic ticket is the end of your life. It can save you hundreds of dollars.

    If you receive the ticket


    You will not get anywhere is you argue with the police officer. Just take your traffic ticket, thank the officer and leave. The faster you leave, the lesser he will remember about you if you decide to fight the ticket and go to court.

  • Remember every detail of the situation. What time you were stopped, what location, how was the weather, your speed (if you got a speeding ticket).

    In court

    Always get a traffic ticket attorney. He/she knows what he/she is doing and more than likely he/she will get you the maximum out of the situation.

  • Plead 'not guilty'. Otherwise what is the point of going to court? And you never know. You might get lucky and have the traffic ticket dismissed.

  • Delay your court date. This way the police officer will more than likely not even remember you, nonetheless the details of the day of your traffic violation. Also, the longer you wait, the higher the chances the police office will not even show up.

    After appearing in court and luckily got your traffic ticket dismissed, or at least saved the points on your driver's license, try and comply with the law. It will save you a lot of headaches, and obviously avoid any interactions with the police officer.
