Knowledge of the sites that your visitors came from is extremely useful information to know when you are planning your advertising strategy. If they are coming from article directories, for instance, it is an indication that you can increase your traffic by writing more articles to these directories. If they are coming from website directories, then perhaps you should try to increase the number of such directories you have submitted to.

So how do you get these web site statistics? There are several web sites statistical packages available, some better than others. Basically, you get what you pay for with these, but your best advice is to contact your web host. They might have their own statistics package that you are unaware of. Many of these come free with the hosting solution you have adopted, but many people do not use them because they are either unaware that they exist, or do not know how to use them. You might also have them running, but have not activated them. Ask your web host if there is a web traffic statistics system with your package. If not they can probably recommend one that works well with your hosting package.

The benefits of web site traffic statistics are too valuable to ignore, so if your hosting company does not provide a package, then you should look round the internet for a system suitable for your web site. You will learn a lot about the performance of your web site, and how to improve it to maximize the benefits you can get through use of the information it provides you with.
